As part of the „Everything you ever wanted to know about fake news, but were afraid to ask” project, Europuls – Centre of European Expertise, a Romanian NGO gathering experts in EU affairs based in Brussels and Bucharest, together with the Association for Independent Press from the Republic of Moldova, are launching an updated version of the StopFals app for mobile phones.
The updated app, now available in Apple Store and Google Play, allows users to be informed and distinguish truth from fake news, in a new and intuitiv interface, in a media environment constantly beset by cyber-trolls, fake websites or controversial information. Now, users will be alerted every time updates will be posted to www.stopfals.md. The notification will lead to a detailed debunk, which will also contain visuals ridiculising the lies, like caricatures, memes or gifs. Moreover, users will also be able to flag potential fake news to be checked by the StopFals team.
Another new concept is Pinnochio – the image of the beloved character from the story of Carlo Collodi, whose nose grows every time a lie is told. He will help users quickly distinguish between partial fakes (such as taking information out of context or fallacious interpretation of news), manipulative information or serious fakes (fabricated or edited news, deep fakes).
Last but not least, the app offers a bilingual Russian-Romanian format and gathers info under three tabs, which offer an easy-to-search and navigate design.
The update of the app is part of the „Everything you ever wanted to know about fake news, but were afraid to ask”, launched by Europuls and financed by the Black Sea Trust Fund, a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
The STOP FALS! campaign against fake or fallacious news was launched by the Association for Independent Press (API).
